One of our most anticipated events this month was a collaboration with our school’s Amnesty International chapter! We titled it “Butterflies in Action”, as the purpose of the event was to raise awareness about immigration rights and to create an art piece for the college and career center at our school. Participants learned how to fold origami butterflies that officers later strung into a garland for the center, as butterflies are commonly used as a symbol of representation when discussing our advocacy for immigration. We defined what refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants are, and shared some statistics about displacement that many didn’t know previously. Many old and new members alike from both clubs showed up at our event, and it was a wonderful introduction to what Key Club does at school! We hope to continue seeing our new members at events.

On February 19th, we hosted an interclub with Albany and Oakland to clean up Adventure Playground and its surrounding trails at Berkeley Marina. It was a sunny and warm day, and for many it was their first time at Berkeley Marina! Lots of members came out and many people met each other (and our Kiwanian, Bill!) for the first time. We grouped up in pairs to effectively work together and maximize how much trash we could pick up. Many community members passed by us on their walks and expressed their gratitude, and it was
great to interact with them too! We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again at the next event.

On January 29th, we helped put on an amazing Lunar New Year Festival at Berkeley Marina in collaboration with the Berkeley Racing Canoe Center, Berkeley Civic Arts Commission, and Berkeley Yacht Club! With an attendee list of 800+ people, they needed all the help they could get throughout the day. We arrived at the marina bright and early and started out with folding origami dragons, bunnies, and lanterns to decorate all the tables! Volunteers were also in the kitchen, peeling pomelos and folding hundreds of dumplings with amazing community members. The atmosphere was full of cheer, excitement, and so much red! Local dragon boating teams like the East Bay Rough Riders, Cal Dragon Boat, and DragonMax were also present, helping out with community members who wanted to try out dragon-boating. We had so much fun meeting community members and volunteering at the Lunar New Year Festival, we hope to be back next year!

Our on-time dues-paid members received their certificates of membership from Key Club International, along with their IDs and pins. We had a little photoshoot with everyone, and it was so good to see all these fresh faces of the future! It was a great environment, and we'd love to thank our dues-paid members for being on-time!

We held another chalk walk at our local elementary school, Harding! Chalk walks are one of our most popular events, beloved by both our members and elementary students! In the spirit of the holidays coming up, we made the theme of this chalk walk Christmas, so there were lots of snowflakes, reindeers, and Christmas trees to be found. It was great to see some new members come out and bring their friends for a fun afternoon of chalky hands and appreciative messages, and we’re looking forward to seeing them at our weekly meetings and future events!

During the month of October, we had our first of many boba fundraisers on campus! Partnering with a local boba shop called Nomi, our advisor and officers went to pick up boxes of drinks just before school ended. We set up right in the middle of the quad, and had pre-orders fulfilled first. Lots of students passed by and stopped to buy a drink, and we ended up making a lot of profit!
Some of our teachers and staff members even stopped by to grab a drink and donate too. It was really nice to see the student body come out and support us in reaching our term goals for fundraising, and we hope to see them again next
month for our second boba fundraiser!

During August, we helped El Cerrito High with school tours for incoming students and introduced them to the different extracurriculars that El Cerrito offers! We also had a table for Key Club in the quad, where we showed off our kiwi spirit! Division 2 North memorabilia was displayed and we also had our spirit stick out, which a lot of students found unique. We ended the day with new members and interested students, and we’ve already seen them at our first meeting!

At the end of September, we had our first chalk walk of the term at our local elementary school! Our Kiwanis advisor also came out, so our newer
members got a chance to meet them too. We spent a few hours writing fun messages and drawing cute graphics, even in the heat! A few new members had the opportunity to come out and draw, and I know they enjoyed their time
with us. The students have loved our drawings and we’re looking forward to more chalk walks as the term progresses!

During July, El Cerrito, Albany, and Oakland had a beautification interclub at Albany Bulb on July 17th. Bill, our Kiwanis Advisor, also accompanied us during our interclub! We took a scenic hike up to the swings of Albany Bulb, while picking up trash and bonding with each other! Everyone took photos at iconic Albany Bulb landmarks, like the swings, giant log, and twig structure. We left Albany Bulb cleaner and greener, and with new friends!

During June, El Cerrito and Oakland had a lovely park beautification interclub at DeFremery Park on June 25th. We worked together as a group to pick up littered trash across the entire park, while getting to know each other and having fun at the skatepark and playground structures. We ended up with around 10 bags of trash, trash-free grassy fields, and fulfilled service hours! I know that I had a really fun time and that I’m looking forward to our next interclub with them!

During May, El Cerrito and Albany had an interclub to help out a local dance studio, Ah-Lan Dance Studio, with their annual spring recital! It was their first big show in 2 years on Saturday, May 28th, and Sunday, May 29th. The show was put on at De Anza High School’s theater, and we had so much fun interacting with the crowd. We checked vax cards and watched little kids backstage, all while enjoying the beautiful show in the audience.
